Set Electronic Water
Here's a Jeopardy question for you ... What weighs 200 million tons, the answer: the amount of electronic waste entering our landfills every year. Computer screens, cell phones, DVD players, copying machines, televisions ... you get the picture.
Most, if not all of the electronic waste containing hazardous chemicals such as mercury, lead and chromium which eventually seep into our groundwater from landfills or be emitted into the atmosphere from incinerators causing a growing environmental and health crisis. This problem is fueled by the rapid pace of new technology that makes electronic products obsolete long before their end of the normal life cycle and the fact that most people do not know how to properly dispose of these types of products. In fact, most do not know that these products can be recycled and reused.
But discarded electronic can be properly disposed or recycled and it is easier than most people think. Tons of companies have programs that allow you to donate used electronics to churches and schools, and other companies will recycle usable components, raw materials and materials such as plastics, glass and aluminum. Many cities also collect e-waste under the hazardous waste pickup programs.
You can even enjoy tax benefits when you donate your unwanted electronics. The environmental benefits of recycling or donate used electronics goes far beyond simply keeping chemicals harmful to the landfill, it also helps conserve our precious natural resources. It takes about 530 kilograms of fossil fuels, 50 kilograms of chemicals and 416 gallons of water to produce a desktop computer. Recycling electronic components can help to preserve these resources and may also help to use much less energy than producing new components. Extraction of aluminum, for example, uses 20 times the amount of energy it need to recycle the same amount of aluminum from electronic components. Last year alone, the electronics recyclers recovered more than 100 million pounds of materials such as aluminum, steel, glass and plastic that have been reused.
Now that we know the benefits of e-cycling let's, is on the way to find an e-cycler in your area. You can start by Alliance electronics industry. This site has an easy to use map that allows you to search for e-bike by the state and offers several other Useful links to guide you through the process. You can also check with your municipality to see if it offers e-bike through its programs hazardous waste or with Goodwill Industries. There are several additional organizations that you can verify that the programs offer training to students and teach individuals how to refurbish used electronic components which are then given local schools:

The learning and information networks for integration community through technology (LINCT)
Reuse Development Organization (REDO)
Even Sam's Club is an interesting program which works in cooperation with new companies Customer Service, Inc. Member of the organization that wants to recycle computers, LCD monitors, printers, camcorders, digital cameras and MP3 players can connect to the program website and print a shipping label for free products shipped to these new members will receive a gift card to Sam for the value of the donated item. All items offered are either refurbished or dismantled and parts are used to rebuild the electronics or materials recycled and reused.
The last pieces the cycle of recycling are personal data security and rethink your buying habits. You must protect all personal data contained on the hard drives of computers and cell phones. Although there are no laws governing the use hazardous materials in electronic equipment, you can help to encourage manufacturers to move into a "greener" direction considering the following when buying your next piece of equipment:
- Does the manufacturer use recycled materials in their products?
- The products are designed for easy upgrades and removal?
- The manufacturer offers does a lease or a "recovery" program?
- Use minimum manufacturer toxic substances in their devices?
- The minimal use of the manufacturer or the packaging recyclable?
The age of electronics It is upon us and with the constant introduction of new technologies, system upgrades and fancy new gadgets to come home Every day, we must be more aware of what we do with our electronic waste. Take time to do the right thing, be sure to trash a one man's treasure is another man and you will be surprised in May that would have your "old" computer
